I was born in Chelsea in 1937, then an area of artists, studios and eccentrics and not the wealthy area that it has turned into. I now live in Gordon’Bay
Before painting, took to drawing. Started when about nine or ten. Painting was a natural extension of drawing. When living with my uncle for a period, became turning point in the development of my art. From him I learnt how to use water colours and to enjoy the pleasures of painting town and landscapes. Living in Chelsea was a great source of material. Holidays in France provided more material from which to develop my painting and drawing.
As a result of studying draftsmanship, as more profitable than art, my background of engineering coupled with my art was to become my livelihood in the field of technical illustration. Painting was my escape and the use of different medium such as oils and acrylics became more dominant in my work.
For a period when undergoing National Service in England, I was afforded a period at the Salisbury Art College which was to be very beneficial and the company of other students a great stimulus.
Technical illustration taught me to view the world through a more analytical eye as the representation of mechanical objects demands an almost photographic approach to illustration.
Currently my work has drifted away from the more structured form of painting engendered by my background in technical illustration. Inspired by the work of Turner my paintings have tended to move to a lighter and more softer approach with adventures into semi-abstract landscapes with an occasional return to conventional work for portraits and commissions.
